Emergency Department’s inquiry demand against former director of RG Kar Hospital

Murder of a doctor in Kolkata: A petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court demanding an ED inquiry against Dr Sandeep Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Hospital and Medical College, which has been allowed by High Court Judge Rajarshi Bhardwaj. It is noteworthy that Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of the hospital, on Wednesday moved the Calcutta High Court and sought an ED inquiry against its former director Sandeep Ghosh, alleging financial irregularities during his tenure at the state-run facility. It may be noted that Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj allowed Akhtar Ali to file a petition, seeking directions to the Enforcement Directorate to probe alleged financial irregularities against Ghosh.

Many cases against Sandeep Ghosh

Akhtar Ali had earlier claimed that he had complained against Ghosh to state government officials in 2023. Former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali claimed that Sandeep Ghosh demanded money for all tenders and did illegal business by smuggling biomedical waste to Bangladesh. Akhtar Ali also alleged that Dr Ghosh also demanded bribes for passing students and took money from various sources including college canteen and biomedical supplies. He said that despite reporting these issues to the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, no action was taken against Dr Ghosh but instead he was assaulted and transferred.

At the same time, advocate Tarun Jyoti Tiwari on behalf of the BJP also filed a petition in the High Court on Wednesday, demanding an ED inquiry against Dr Sandeep Ghosh. Both the cases are likely to be heard in the High Court soon. It may be noted that the state government had on Monday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The SIT has also registered an FIR against Dr Ghosh. The SIT had called Dr Sandeep Ghosh for questioning in this case on Wednesday, but he did not arrive. It may be noted that on the directions of the High Court, the CBI is investigating the case of rape and murder of a young woman doctor.
