Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is scheduled to submit a status report on Thursday (August 22) in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On the orders of the Supreme Court, the CBI will submit a detailed investigation report in a sealed cover before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.

Sources indicate that the report will outline the current stage of the investigation, including the ongoing polygraph tests and other scientific investigations. The exact contents of the report, including the angles of the investigation and future steps, will be submitted to the Supreme Court. While the CBI will not reveal specific details of the investigation before filing the report, we can give an overview of the current direction and stage of investigation in the case.

What will the CBI include in its report?

According to sources, the CBI report will cover:

  • The current state of research
  • The number of registered statements
  • Confessions made by accused Sanjay Roy during interrogation
  • Forensic report details
  • Conclusions drawn from the reconciliation of the statements of the accused with the recreation of the investigation
  • Whether Sanjay Roy acted alone or whether others were involved in the crime
  • Former director Sandeep Ghosh’s involvement in the case
  • Were any shortcomings found in the Kolkata police investigation?
  • The suspected roles of several persons, including ASI Arup Dutta, and the reasons for their suspicion

A CBI team in Kolkata, led by an Additional Director and a DSP, is working on preparing this report. They aim to finalise it by tonight and submit it to the Supreme Court in the morning.

What has the CBI done so far?

Below is a summary of the progress of the case so far:

  • For the past six days, the CBI has been persistently questioning two key persons – Sanjay Roy (the main accused) and Sandeep Ghosh (former director).
  • The CBI team conducted forensic tests at the hospital to gather evidence.
  • Five forensic doctors from the CFSL team of the CBI conducted a psychological evaluation of accused Sanjay Roy to assess his mental state. Based on this test, a detailed report was prepared to help the investigating agency determine the reliability of Roy’s statements.
  • Accused Sanjay Roy will undergo a polygraph test, and this will be included in the report to the Supreme Court.
  • The CBI also examined whether Sanjay Roy acted alone in the incident or if more people were involved.
  • In the last seven days, the CBI has visited the crime scene (hospital) several times, collected samples and mapped the location. They went through the CCTV footage to trace Sanjay Roy’s movements before and after the incident.
  • Many fingerprints have been found at the crime scene because it was not kept secure after the murder. In addition, renovations in the area have raised concerns about the possible destruction of crucial evidence.

The CBI is investigating former director Sandeep Ghosh from several angles:

  • Why did Sandeep Ghosh quickly inform the family that his daughter had committed suicide?
  • Was such a thing said deliberately in order to cover up the murder and destroy the evidence?
  • Why did Ghosh hold a meeting with the hospital staff before informing the police?
  • Why did you immediately resign and take up a new position? Was it to avoid accusations against you?

The CBI is also investigating former director Ghosh for possible tampering with evidence and trying to determine whether he is involved in a larger conspiracy.

After conducting a psychological test, the CBI requested the court to conduct a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, which the court approved. However, this test can only be conducted with the consent of the accused. It is not yet clear whether the preliminary results of the polygraph test will be included in the detailed investigation report to be submitted to the Supreme Court.
