The woman’s lawyer justified the huge amount by detailing various expenses including designer clothes, accessories, food and medical treatments. The judge, however, balked at the demand, saying, “If she wants to spend so much, let her earn, not the husband.” The court criticised the excessive figures submitted, which included expenses like “Rs 15,000 per month on accessories and a considerable amount on designer clothes.”
The lawyer argued that the plaintiff needed to maintain a standard of living comparable to that of her husband, citing the costs of nutritious food, designer clothes and regular medical treatments. However, the judge noted the need for the alimony to be reasonable, emphasizing that the husband should not be seen as a punishment, but as a fair support mechanism.
The judge also advised the lawyer to guide his client towards a more practical and realistic expectation, saying: “You have to come to court with the real figures… It’s not a question of, I’ll do it, it’s like haggling.”
