TRAI issues advisory on fraudulent calls posing as telecom regulator

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a warning to citizens on Wednesday fraudulent calls claiming to be from the telecommunications regulator.

The telecoms regulator said scammers are using pre-recorded messages to threaten people, claiming that their mobile numbers You will be blocked soon and some personal information will be requested.

“The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been informed that many robocalls are being made to citizens claiming to be from TRAI. Citizens are being threatened that their numbers will be blocked soon and are being asked by the scammers to provide certain personal information,” the TRAI notice read.

The telecom regulator did not say that it has not initiated communication with customers about disconnecting the mobile number through messages or otherwise, nor has it authorised any third-party agency to contact them. customers for such purposes.

“Therefore, any form of communication (call, message or notice) claiming to be from TRAI and threatening to disconnect the mobile number should be considered as a possible fraud attempt and should not be entertained,” the notice added.

Disconnection of any mobile number due to billing, KYC or misuse if any, is done by the respective Telecom Service Provider (TSP), the regulator added.

Citizens are advised to be vigilant and not panic as they may fall into the hands of suspected scammers. People are also advised to verify such calls by contacting authorized call centers or customer care centers of the relevant TSP.

To prevent misuse of telecom resources for cybercrime and financial fraud, citizens are encouraged to report suspected fraudulent communications through the Chakshu feature on the Sanchar Saathi platform of the Department of Telecommunications.

For confirmed cases of CybercrimeVictims should report the incident to the designated cybercrime helpline number ‘1930’ or through the official website at cybercrime.gov.in, the telecom regulator said.
