In a shocking turn of events, the breaking of a seemingly harmless cigarette led to a major fire in Kalyanadurgam town, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, this morning. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 am, was captured on CCTV and shows how a smoker’s carelessness led to a fire that severely damaged several shops and vehicles.
The fire reportedly started when a man, who had bought five litres of petrol from a local petrol station, spilled the liquid on the road due to a leak in a container. CCTV footage reveals that the petrol spilled on a road lined with shops and parked vehicles.
In the footage, two men are seen standing near the spill, chatting in front of the petrol jet. One of them lit a ‘beedi’ and threw the lit match on the road. The match fell directly into the petrol jet, causing an immediate and intense fire. The sudden blaze caused panic among those present, who fled for safety.
A man who was parked in the danger zone tried to prevent further damage, but when he realized the motorcycle was already on fire, he abandoned it and ran for shelter.
The rapid spread of the fire caused significant damage to several shops and vehicles parked in the vicinity. Fortunately, local residents acted quickly to control the fire and prevent further damage.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of careless smoking and improper handling of flammable materials. In a similar vein, earlier this year, a tragic incident in Kolkata highlighted the fatal risks of smoking-related accidents. A 28-year-old man, Saptarshi Mitra, died of suffocation after falling asleep with a lit cigarette in his hand, causing a fire that engulfed his bed and mattress.
