Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the tragic reactor explosion at a pharmaceutical company in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh, which claimed 17 lives and injured several others. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of the deceased, while the injured will be given Rs 50,000. PM Modi conveyed his condolences and wished the injured a speedy recovery in a message on X.

“We mourn the loss of lives due to an accident at a factory in Anakapalle. Our deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Compensation of Rs 200,000 will be given by PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured will be given Rs 50,000,” the PMO said in a post on X.

Rescue operations underway

Rescue efforts are continuing at the scene of the incident. Andhra Pradesh Minister Vasamsetti Subhash said that heavy smoke has prevented rescue teams from entering the site, leaving several people trapped inside. The minister said teams are working tirelessly to reach those inside and further updates will be provided soon.

“Rescue teams are unable to enter the premises due to heavy smoke and rescue operations are underway. It is unclear how many people may be trapped inside the company. Rescue teams are working to get there as soon as possible and further updates will be provided soon,” the Minister said.

The state government’s response

Responding to the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a high-level inquiry into the cause of the blast and fire. The Chief Minister is expected to visit the families of the deceased and the injured on Thursday. Also, Governor Abdul Nazeer expressed anguish over the tragedy and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
