Ten dead in floods and landslides in Tripura

AgartalaAt least 10 people have been killed and one is missing in landslides and flood-related incidents in Tripura since Sunday, an official statement said.

At least 32,750 people have taken shelter in 330 refugee camps due to heavy rains, the report said.

“Due to excessive rainfall since Sunday, water levels in major rivers have already exceeded the danger threshold, flooding several areas. Ten people have died in landslides and flood-related incidents since Sunday. In total, 32,750 people have taken shelter in 330 relief camps,” according to a government statement released on Wednesday.

He said the northeastern state witnessed as many as 1,900 landslides causing disruptions in road connectivity.

A red alert has been issued in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts for heavy rainfall on Thursday, it said.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), NDRF, central paramilitary forces including Assam Riflemen are taking part in rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, said the flooding in the state was “unprecedented”.

“Unprecedented floods have occurred in the state. We are closely monitoring the situation. District magistrates have been asked to provide all possible assistance to the affected people,” he said.
