Supreme Court takes tough stand against ‘manipulation’ in Calcutta rape and murder case

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) suspects that there was an attempt to tamper with evidence in the Calcutta doctor rape and murder case. The central agency said that they started the probe on the fifth day and by then everything was “stirred up”.
He added that there was an allegation and the registration of the FIR after its creation was the “most shocking” thing they came across. The Attorney General (SG) informed the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court that the CBI suspected a “cover-up” in the case.
“The crime scene has been tampered with,” the CBI said through the SG. When CJI DY Chandrachud asked about the medical report of the injury, the CBI claimed that they were not aware of any such report.
“We were not aware that such a report existed, we entered the investigation on the fifth day and everything was in a state of flux,” the SG, representing the CBI, said.
“The most shocking fact is that the FIR was registered at 11:45 p.m., after the cremation,” he added.
The Supreme Court raises serious doubts about the investigation carried out by the Kolkata Police and said, “The West Bengal government and the police are unable to respond to us.”
Assessing the case diary, Judge B Pardiwala said it appeared that some pages had been inserted later. “It appears to us that some pages (in the context of the case diary) have been inserted later… give us only the hard copy. Let the CBI investigate it… it appears that this has been inserted later,” he said.
Supreme Court stands firm on investigation
Raising tough questions to the West Bengal government and Kolkata police, the CJI said, “It appears that the crime was cordoned off only after the death in the evening.”
“Why was there a delay in this regard? It was already known in the morning that it was an unnatural death,” he said.
The high court criticised the police for tampering with the crime scene and also pointed out serious flaws in the investigation.
