Lucien Laviscount as Alfie in Emily in Paris season 4

When you came into season two of Emily in Paris, you said you felt like the new kid on the block. You were only hired for two episodes, but here you are in season four. How do you feel on set and in Paris?

The city and the cast welcomed me with open arms from day one. Before we started shooting, I was already overcome with all the emotions. I remember on the first day, Lily came up to me and gave me a hug. She held me for a while and whispered in my ear, “You can do this, Lucien, you can do this.” And from there, everything opened up. Everyone gave me such a warm welcome. And I love Paris. Paris has become my second home now. The people, the culture, the food… It’s a magical, magical place, and it’s given me so much. So, yes, thank you Paris for being amazing. And thank you to my cast for making me feel at home. Alfie is a part of me and will be forever because of the great experiences I’ve had in the city and the people who make the city so special. So yes, Alfie feels like home.

From what we saw in the first part of season 4, Emily broke Alfie’s heart again. What is it about Emily that makes Alfie get close to her again? Is he being cheated on?

I think when he met Emily, he was in a state of flight, of escape. His state of mind was just running away from Paris, running away from everything. He found a real connection with her. She opened his eyes. They became good friends, as much as everything else. It’s hard to walk away from someone who had such a big impact on your life. I don’t think she’s cheating on him. I think she’s figuring things out for herself. Alfie is figuring it out too. He didn’t realize he was in this love triangle situation. So I think he’s just being honest with his feelings. I think that’s what’s there across the board: they’re just trying to be as honest as they can with their emotions, even though that might feel wrong.

Emily says that both Alfie and Gabriel (lucas bravo) mean a lot to her for different reasons. What do you think are her reasons for choosing Alfie?

Oh my god, Alfie is like a breath of fresh air for her. I think he gives her that feeling of being alive without having to deal with any of the pressures that she has to deal with with the character of Gabriel. There’s a freedom in that. He allows her to be who she is in the moment that she is now. She doesn’t have to carry any of her past here. Alfie is almost like that new beginning for her. And Alfie is a really cool guy. I would like to be friends with Alfie.Laughter).

Do you think Alfie and Emily also connect because they are outsiders in the city?

I think that definitely has a role to play there. Anyone who comes from a different place and starts a whole life in a new place definitely attracts people as “nomads,” if that makes any sense. It definitely brings people together. But I think it goes much deeper than that. There’s clearly an attraction there and a level of respect between them. She respects where Alfie works, and he appreciates — or well, he’s learned to appreciate — how she works and how she runs her business. So I guess it’s not so much the situation they’re in, but more what they’re doing with that situation that brings them together.

You said that Paris is your second home now. What do you think stops Alfie from loving Paris like you do, or from coming to love it like Emily does?

I don’t want to speak for all Brits right now, but the one thing we can all agree on is the weather. We love to complain about the weather. We love to complain about things. That’s the thing. Alfie could be in heaven and find cracks in it. And that attitude is a charm too. He somehow keeps everything grounded. It’s not that he doesn’t get carried away by his emotions, but I’d say he keeps it grounded.

Finally, is there any advice you would give Alfie for the next installment?

Change. Yes, just change. There are a lot of things going up and down, there are a lot of moving parts, but in the second part, there are a lot of changes happening in your life.

The first part of season 4 of Emily in Paris is available to watch on Netflix. The second part will premiere on September 12.
