22 dead as heavy rains continue to lash Tripura

Agartala: At least 22 people have been killed and two others are missing in Tripura due to incessant rains over the past few days and landslides. Tripura authorities confirmed the incident and said that around 65,400 people have taken shelter in 450 relief camps in the state as their houses have been damaged due to torrential rains.

Ten people were buried under debris after landslides hit Ashwani Tripura Para and Debipur in Santirbazar, Chief Minister Manik Saha said in a Facebook post.

“… I convey my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. This is an irreparable loss. The state government has announced payment of Rs 400,000 to the families of each victim as financial assistance,” he said.

Earlier, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey had said that 12 people died due to heavy rains in the northeastern state.

“So far, 12 people have lost their lives and two are missing. Preliminary reports suggest that there has been significant damage to physical infrastructure and agricultural crops, as well as to homes and livestock. The actual figures will be known after an on-the-ground assessment is carried out,” he said at a press conference.

Around 17 lakh people have been affected in the northeastern state, the official said.

Pandey said landslides were reported from 2,032 places, of which 1,789 have been cleared, while restoration work is underway at the other places.

“Road erosion occurred at 1,952 locations,” he said.

He said the Centre has provided two helicopters to airlift the stranded people in Gomati and South Tripura districts.

More than 750 people have been evacuated across the state, Assam Rifles said in a statement.

“Female riflemen of Assam Rifles are leading relief and rescue operations in Tripura. Four rescue columns have been launched in various parts of the state including East Kanchanbari, Kumarghat, Unakoti district, Amarpur of Gomati district, Bishalgarh, Sepahijala and West Tripura,” he said.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places in Tripura on Thursday and Friday.

All educational institutions in the state will remain closed on Friday due to bad weather, according to an official order.
