PM Modi leaves for historic visit to Ukraine after concluding trip to Poland

Prime minister Narendra Modi Polish President Vladimir Putin left on Thursday for a historic visit to Ukraine after concluding a “productive” two-day trip to Poland, during which he held extensive talks with Polish leaders.

“Prime Minister @narendramodi concludes a productive visit to Poland, marking a new milestone in bilateral relations. This high-level visit by the Prime Minister after four decades will further expand and deepen India-Poland relations,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.

Modi, who is visiting Ukraine at the invitation of the president Volodymyr Zelenskyhas said he will share with the Ukrainian leader perspectives on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict.

His visit to kyiv comes nearly six weeks after his high-profile trip to Moscow, which sparked criticism from the United States and some of its Western allies.

This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991.

“I look forward to the opportunity to build on the previous talks with President Zelensky to strengthen bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine,” Modi said. “As a friend and partner, we look forward to an early return of peace and stability in the region.” The prime minister will travel to kyiv from Poland on a ‘Rail Force One’ train which will take about ten hours. The return journey will also take the same duration.

India has yet to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has called for a resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Before leaving Warsaw, Modi said his visit to Poland had been “special”.

“It has been decades since an Indian prime minister set foot on Polish soil,” Modi said in a post on X at the end of his visit to Warsaw.

Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday on the first leg of his two-nation tour, during which he will also travel to the Ukrainian capital kyiv. His visit to Poland is the first trip by an Indian prime minister to the country in the last 45 years.

“This visit has given us the opportunity to deepen cooperation with a valued friend. We look forward to strengthening trade and cultural ties with Poland. Our friendship can certainly contribute to improving the planet. I thank the Polish people and Government for their cordiality,” the Prime Minister added.
