What is the history of National Space Day?
On this day last year, i.e. in 2023, India will achieve a great feat by becoming the fourth country to land on the Moon and the first country to land near its south polar region. With this remarkable achievement, August 23 has been officially declared as National Space Day, symbolizing India’s growing strength in space exploration.

The declaration of National Space Day is a celebration of India’s technological progress in space research and exploration. The success of Chandrayaan-3 not only established India as a major player in the global space race but also symbolised the dedication and hard work of ISRO scientists and engineers.
Chandrayaan 3 successfully made a soft landing on the surface of the Moon
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a historic feat with the successful landing of Vikram Lander in the south polar region of the Moon on August 23, 2024. India became the first country in the world to land in the south polar region of the Moon and the fourth country to land on the Moon. The Vikram lander along with the Pragyan rover achieved a major milestone in India’s space exploration efforts by landing on the lunar surface. The Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. To honour ISRO’s historic achievement in the mission to the Moon, Prime Minister Modi declared August 23 as the National Space Mission.
