Liam Lawson to drive Red Bull’s car, confirms Helmut Marko

Liam Lawson is one of the top prospects in F1 and is currently on the sidelines as he patiently waits to be chosen as a permanent driver for either of the Red Bull teams. Lawson last competed during the Formula Super series in 2023. Lawson is currently the reserve driver for both Red Bull teams: Red Bull and RB.

There have been rumours in the paddock that Lawson could be promoted to either Sergio Perez’s or Daniel Ricciardo’s seat, as both drivers have not performed well.

This did not come to pass and Lawson remained as reserve driver, but Red Bull could end up losing him as a clause in his contract states that Red Bull must put him in a racing seat by 2025 or it is free to explore other options.

Helmut Marko confirms his position at Lawson

In an interview with an Austrian newspaper, Helmut Marko revealed that there will be a decision on Liam Lawson in September. Marko said in an interview that Liam Lawson will definitely be in one of our cars next season. There is currently a lot of speculation about the choice of the Red Bull and RB driver for the next season, as rumors about Max Verstappen’s departure from the team are becoming more frequent.

There is also the case of Sergio Perez, who could be released due to the disappointing season he is having. The same goes for Daniel Ricciardo at right back, who is also in the spotlight due to his poor performances.

Daniel Ricciardo’s take on Helmut’s comments

Daniel Ricciardo, speaking about Helmut Marko’s comments that Liam Lawson will definitely drive for a Red Bull team next season, said: “I still know that performance is my best friend.

“And that’s if I do what I know I can do and [am] If I can do that, I’ll put myself in a very good position to stay somewhere in the family next year. I just have to focus on that.

“Speaking of Liam, I got to see him drive the car last year. [after Ricciard’s injury at Zandvoort 2023] And I think he did a great job.

“I think he deserves a seat on the grid. In a way, I’m happy for him.”

“If they guarantee him a seat next year, then I think it’s good, because he’s a driver who deserves it.

“And what does that mean for me? Like I said, I’m probably a bit of an unknown, but if I do perform, I’m sure they’ll find a place for me somewhere.”

Rumours of Daniel Ricciardo being removed from his RB seat are circulating after the Australian driver has had several disappointing seasons since leaving Red Bull racing a few years ago.
