Nagaland government considers partial lifting of liquor ban amid rising concerns

Government of Nagaland has hinted Partial lifting of Prohibition of Alcoholic Beverages Act.

The state cabinet meeting on Thursday hinted at a partial lifting of the Nagaland Total Liquor Prohibition Act, 1989 and the matter is likely to be discussed during the Nagaland Monsoon Assembly SessionNagaland is a Christianity dominated the state.

Nagaland government spokesperson and Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs KG Kenye said, “The government is likely to revisit the matter and depending on the majority of the members, the government might take this case to the state assembly for some amendments.”

He added: “The entry of liquor is unchecked and unregulated and there are no departments to control the quality of liquor. This has become extremely dangerous for our society. So perhaps our religious leaders have tried their best, they are trying their best because they understand the threat this creates in society. They have not been able to educate people not to indulge in such activities.”

Kenye said the government has also done its best to control adulterated liquor. “Our state is a dry state and well-meaning and conscious citizens are concerned about the effect this has on the health and morals of the society.

He also pointed out the revenue losses due to Nagaland being a dry state. Christianity dominated Mizoram again and it became a dry state in 2019. The Mizo National Front (MNF) passed the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Bill 2019, banning the manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor. The Mizo National Front (MNF) promised before last year’s assembly elections that it would implement the liquor ban.

The MNF had promised to reinstate the Mizoram Total Liquor Prohibition (MLTP) Act, 1995, which was superseded in 2014 by the Congress despite opposition from church bodies and civil society groups.

The Congress, which had been ruling the state for the last 10 years, admitted that lifting the ban hurt the sentiments of the Church and this led to the debacle of the Congress party in the recent assembly elections.
