Tripura floods: Tripura faces severe flooding; IMD maintains red alert

Home Minister Shah said in a post on the X website: “I spoke to Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Ji and took stock of the flood situation in the state. The Centre is sending NDRF teams, along with boats and helicopters, to the state to assist the local government in relief and rescue operations. I have assured all possible assistance from the Centre wherever required. The Modi government stands firmly with our brothers and sisters in Tripura during this hour of crisis.”

Later, the Chief Minister, expressing his gratitude to the Home Minister, said that His Majesty Shah had informed him that 11 NDRF teams would be sent to Tripura from different places in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He said that arrangements would also be made for helicopters to airlift the people stranded in the flood-affected areas. “More boats will also be sent along with the NDRF teams. The entire machinery of the state government has been working round the clock to deal with this unprecedented natural calamity. I thank the public representatives, social workers and people at large for cooperating with the state government in this hour of crisis,” Chief Minister Saha said.

All educational institutions have been closed since Wednesday.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said that though the warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall remains in effect and a red alert has been sounded in all eight districts, the rains are likely to reduce slightly from Thursday evening.

“The low pressure area over northern Bangladesh and surrounding areas persisted over the same region on Thursday. The associated cyclonic circulation is now extending up to 9.4 km above mean sea level. It is likely to move almost westward across West Bengal during the next 48 hours. Further, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas on August 24,” the official said.

The IMD recorded 233 mm of rain from 8.30 am on August 21 to 8.30 am on Thursday.

More than 1,055 homes were partially or completely damaged and hundreds of trees were uprooted, blocking many important roads.

Most of the major rivers in Tripura are flowing above critical or danger levels, while the state’s main river Gomati has crossed the ‘extreme danger level’ at many places in Gomati and Sepahijala districts as rains have continued.

Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) has cancelled 10 local trains in Tripura.

A defense spokesman said that, following the requisition of state administrations, four columns of Assam Rifles They have been deployed in different districts and are working in close coordination with the civil administration to rescue civilians stranded due to floods.
