The BJP has set a target of increasing its membership in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by 20,000 during a campaign starting in September, a senior leader said on Friday.

BJP national secretary and spokesperson Anil Antony said the target was “ambitious but achievable”.

“In 2014, the BJP had just 8,126 members in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In 2019, the number has increased to 55,000,” Antony said at a press conference here.

“The membership campaign will be carried out in phases from September 1 to November 10. People can register through a missed call, through digital platforms or through a manual membership campaign,” he explained.

Antony said a series of events, including workshops at morcha, mandal and a stall on August 31, will be held in the coming months to achieve the goal.

The membership campaign will be carried out in two phases from September 1 to 25 and from October 1 to 31.

“On September 25, we will carry out a door-to-door membership recruitment campaign and on October 1, a special meeting with prominent figures will be held. On November 10, there will be digital campaigns throughout the archipelago,” he said.

BJP state vice president and party media in-charge M Vinod said that both online and offline membership drives will be conducted in the islands due to poor mobile and internet connectivity in some remote areas.

“In addition to missed calls and online campaigns, we are also going to opt for registration through paper receipts in remote areas. We are confident of achieving the goal. We hope for further development in the territory of the Union,” he said.

BJP candidate Bishnu Pada Ray defeated Congress MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma by a margin of 24,087 votes in this year’s Lok Sabha elections.
