Durand Cup 2024: Mohun Bagan defeated Punjab FC in the third quarter-final of the 2024 Durand Cup to keep their title defence alive on Friday, August 23. The Mariners overcame a tough challenge from the Punjab side 6-5 in sudden death to make their way into the semi-finals.
The match was decided at the JRD Sports Complex Stadium in Jamshedpur. The score was tied 3-3 and there was no difference between the two teams in regular time. With no extra time available, the match went to penalties.
Punjab led 4-3 from the first four spot-kicks but lost steam when it mattered most. Ivan hit the post with the final attempt before Stewart scored for the Mariners and took the match to sudden death. Both teams scored but Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Kaith made a save from the second spot-kick, after which Aldred scored for the defenders and won the match.
The match was tied 3-3 at regular time. The pendulum of the match swung throughout the 90 minutes. Punjab scored first with Luka Majcen scoring a penalty in the 17th minute before Greg Stewart’s shot, deflected into the goal by Suhail Bhat, brought the Mariners back to level terms.
Manvir put Mohubn Bagan ahead early in the second half with a 48th-minute shot that curled into the bottom left corner. With half an hour remaining, it looked like the defenders would pull off the win, but Punjab hit back with two goals in eight minutes to lead 3-2 going into the final 15 minutes. Filip scored Punjab’s first in the second half, firing the ball in at bullet speed before Pulga Vidal put Punjab ahead in the 71st minute. With time ticking away, Jason Cummins equalised again for the Mariners in the 79th minute, taking the match on penalties, where the defenders eventually prevailed in sudden death.
