The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered its third year and there has been loss of life on both sides. Amid the ongoing war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia earlier and is currently on a visit to Ukraine where he held bilateral talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During the meeting, India stressed the need for Ukraine and Russia to engage in talks to find a solution to the conflict.
Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy held extensive talks, during which the Indian side stressed the importance of “practical engagement” among all stakeholders to develop an innovative solution that would foster broad acceptance and contribute to peace and stability in the region. “We also had discussions on the ongoing conflict. It is of utmost importance that peace is maintained. A peaceful solution to the conflict is in the best interest of humanity,” Modi said.

Speaking on the India-Ukraine meeting, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said Prime Minister Modi conveyed to Zelensky India’s willingness to contribute “in every possible way” to facilitate an early return of peace to Ukraine and the region.
Jaishankar described the discussion as detailed, open and constructive in many ways. He said the talks addressed the military situation, concerns such as food and energy security and possible avenues for peace.

The Foreign Minister said that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue cooperation in defending the principles of international law, such as respect for territorial integrity and protection of the sovereignty of States.
Prime Minister Modi also shared insights from his recent talks with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. According to Jaishankar, Modi asked President Zelenskyy for an assessment of both the current situation on the ground and the broader diplomatic landscape, and Zelenskyy provided his views on both issues.

Jaishankar called Modi’s visit to kyiv a “historic” trip. The Prime Minister arrived in kyiv on a special train in the morning, where he was received by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine. An important part of the talks between Modi and Zelensky focused on strengthening bilateral relations.
According to Modi, trade, economic issues, defence, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and education were discussed. The India-Ukraine intergovernmental commission was also tasked with focusing specifically on rebuilding trade and economic relations.
