Tomatoes: Big sandwiches call for big tomatoes! I love heirloom tomatoes or beefsteak tomatoes, but honestly, any ripe, juicy variety works.
Bread: White bread is a classic for soaking up all the fresh tomato juice. Replace white bread with sourdough bread or thick slices of brioche.
Mayonnaise: Use a good quality mayonnaise such as Duke’s Mayonnaise or Hellmanns.
Condiments: Sprinkle a little salt and pepper, lemon peppereither all in one bagel seasoning about tomatoes before assembling a tomato sandwich: anything goes!
Variations
You can add variations, but I think the best tomato sandwich is the one that is kept simple.
- Roasted tomatoes They are juicy and delicious on toast.
- Marinated tomatoes In oil, vinegar and basil they also make a tasty sandwich.
- Serve it open on ricotta toast with a fried egg and a slice of bacon for a delicious breakfast, or turn it into a BLT.
- Add fresh basil, red onion, lettuce or cheese.
How to make a tomato sandwich
As much as I love the BLT, this sandwich is truly one of the best ways to enjoy fresh summer tomatoes!
- Slice the tomatoes and place them on clean paper towels.
- Season the tomatoes with salt and black pepper.
- Spread mayonnaise on each slice of bread and layer tomatoes on top.
- Top with a second slice of bread and cut in half before serving.

Use a serrated knife to cut the tomatoes into ½-inch thick slices.

Place the tomato slices on a paper towel for 1 to 2 minutes to absorb some moisture. Season with salt and pepper.
