Extension IndiaThe dominance of the women’s event at the U-17 World Championship, Kajal She became the fifth wrestler from the country to claim the title in the current edition with her emphatic 9-2 victory over Ukraine’s Oleksandra Rybak in the 69kg weight class here on Saturday.

However, Shrutika had to settle for silver after being outclassed by Japan’s Yuu Katsume, who finished the gold medal match in the 46kg category in just 40 seconds. Raj Bala took bronze in the 40kg category with an 11-5 win over Japan’s Monaka Umekawa, while Muskan edged out USA’s Isabella Gonzales on technical superiority in the bronze play-off in the 53kg category to add to India’s tally.

However, Rajnita lost the bronze in the women’s 61kg category “by fall” to Azerbaijan’s Hiunai Hurbanova. She was the only one not to get a medal in an extremely successful edition for Indian women.

Indian women claimed eight medals, including five gold, one silver and three bronze. Aditi Kumari (43kg), Neha (57kg), Pulkit (65kg) and Mansi Lather (73kg) won the titles in their respective categories on Friday.

Katsume grabbed the Indian with a double-leg attack from the start. She didn’t let Shrutika get away, creating moves that allowed her to score points (exposure and intestinal tear) one after another to take the title.

However, India’s male freestyle wrestlers could not replicate the success of their female counterparts as none of the five wrestlers in action on Friday could make it to the semi-finals.

Of the five, only two, Harsh and Vevik, managed to win a round. Harsh (48kg) started with a confident 6-2 victory over Erbol Bolotov, but was outclassed by Chingis Saryglar in the quarter-finals.

In the 55kg category, Jaiveer Singh fell at the first hurdle, losing on criteria (3-3) to Azatberdi Ashyrgulyev, who then lost his quarter-final to end the Indian’s chance of returning via the repechage.

At 65kg, Sagar lost his qualifying bout 5-7 to Bakdaulet Akimzhan and will now have to wait to see if the repechage route opens up for him.

Vevik started with a decent 11-4 win over Aliaksei Kuryla, but lost his quarter-final bout on technical superiority to Nikoloz Maisuradze.

In the 110kg fight, Jaspooran Singh lost by criteria (1-1) to Yedige Kassimbek of Kazakhstan.
