Bengali actress was booed by a motorcyclist while driving at night in Kolkata

Calcutta: Bengali actress Payel Mukherjee said she was allegedly jeered by a motorcyclist while driving her car on a city street on Friday night.

Payel, sobbing, said in a video on Facebook that a young man stopped his two-wheeler in front of her SUV on Southern Avenue and asked her to get out of the vehicle.

“As I refused to leave for fear of my safety, the man punched the glass of my right window and broke it into pieces, injuring my hand,” she said.

Neighbours came to his aid and the police arrested the man following a complaint filed by Payel.

The man claimed that Payel’s car had grazed his bicycle, but he apologised to the police for the incident. The actor denied that anything of the sort had happened.

“I don’t know what our current situation is. If a woman can be harassed and jeered like this on a crowded street at night, that exemplifies the real situation. And this is happening amidst protests taking place across the city on the issue of women’s safety,” Payel, who is also a well-known face in the southern film industry, said in the Bengali video.

“I shudder to think what would have happened to me if this incident had happened in a deserted place,” Payel added, visibly shaken and crying.

The incident occurred as the city witnessed spontaneous protests for the past 10 days against the murder and rape of a post-graduate doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital.
