Knife attack in Solingen, Germany

A knife attack at the city festival in SolingenIn Germany, at least three people were killed and several others injured, local media reported on Friday. The tabloid Bild cited witnesses as adding that the suspect, who has not yet been identified, looked like an “Arab man.” Images from the scene showed dozens of rescue workers tending to the victims.
According to local media, a man stabbed several people at random at the festival at around 9:45 p.m. local time. The Solinger Tageblatt newspaper reported that a co-organizer explained on stage at the festival that emergency services were treating at least nine victims. The suspect has not yet been arrested or identified.
The town festival has been cancelled and a police helicopter could be seen hovering over the cordoned-off area. The local Solingen Tageblatt newspaper reported on its website that the attack took place during a party in honour of the town’s 650th anniversary. Police said they were not yet able to comment.
Solingen, a city in western Germany, has a population of 160,000 and is located about 25 km east of Düsseldorf and northeast of Cologne.
According to Bild, around 40 special vehicles from all over North Rhine-Westphalia have been deployed in Solingen and level crossings have been closed. Residents have been asked to stay indoors.
According to local media, Philipp Müller, one of the organisers, informed the audience from the stage that emergency services were on site. “People left the square in shock, but peacefully,” Müller said.
