NIA arrests man in 2010 Kerala teacher’s palm amputation case | India News

The NIA on Friday arrested a member of the banned Popular Font of India (PFI) organisation who had allegedly sheltered an accused in the infamous Kerala professor palm amputation case, an official said. The agency said C. Shafeer had provided shelter to accused Savad after he absconded following the attack on retired professor TJ Joseph in Muvattupuzha in July 2010.

“NIA investigations have revealed that Shafeer himself was allegedly involved in several violent acts for PFI,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement. Savad was captured from Kannur in January this year by the agency after being on the run for 13 years, the spokesperson said.

“A member of the PFI hit team, he was charged in January 2021 in the case, which was one of the first such incidents in India, reflecting the ideology of violent extremism pursued by the organisation,” he said. Nineteen people have so far been convicted of various offences under the Indian Penal Code and the UA(P) Act in the case, which was filed after a professor’s palm was chopped off for allegedly ridiculing Prophet Muhammad in a Malayalam question paper prepared for the internal examination of BCom students at Newman College, Thodupuzha, Idukki district, Kerala.
