Meghalaya police arrest four Bangladeshi nationals without valid documents

Shillong: At least four Bangladeshis were among the six people detained in MeghalayaEast Jaintia Hills. Meghalaya police officials confirmed the report on Friday and said the action was taken based on a tip-off. Alert BSF personnel arrested the four Bangladeshis on Thursday evening along with two suspected touts who allegedly helped them cross into India without valid documents.

The Bangladeshis were identified as Bashir Ahmed, his wife and two girls, one of whom is his daughter.

“They are natives of Cox Bazaar in Bangladesh and were arrested by a BSF patrol team at Ratacherra while travelling in an auto-rickshaw along with two touts. Assam“Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad told PTI.

A case has been registered under various sections of the BNS and the Foreigners Act, he said.

The girls will be brought before the Juvenile Justice Board, he added.

A BSF officer said an inquiry has been ordered to find out how they managed to sneak in.

Since the violence broke out BangladeshBangladeshi citizens tried several times to cross into India through the unfenced sector in Meghalayasaid.

The BSF has kept its troops along the border on high alert, he said.
