The White House called India a strong partner of the United States and said the US welcomes any other country willing to help try to end the conflict in Ukraine and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to kyiv can help bring about a peaceful resolution aligned with Zelenskyy’s vision.
National security communications adviser John Kirby said any conversation about the Ukraine conflict must include kyiv at the table.
“When it comes to the war in Ukraine, if there is another country that is willing to help in trying to end the war in Ukraine, we welcome that. But when we say helpful, we mean it has to include conversations with the Ukrainians and it has to start with understanding President Zelensky’s position on this,” Kirby told reporters on Friday.
“We say it all the time and it sounds like I’m putting a bumper sticker, but I don’t mean to: Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” he added.
Commenting on Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine, Kirby said, “Prime Minister Modi, India is a strong partner for the United States, and the Prime Minister is a strong partner as well. And, you know, your trip to Kyiv and your conversations with President Zelensky about where all of this ends and how it ends, whether that can be helpful in ending the conflict that comes with it.”
“President Zelensky’s vision for a just peace, so we thought it would be helpful.”
Prime Minister Modi concluded his visit to Ukraine on Friday, the first by an Indian prime minister to the European nation since India established diplomatic relations with Ukraine in 1992.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Zelensky during their bilateral meeting that dialogue is the only solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
“India has never been neutral, we have always been on the side of peace,” Prime Minister Modi told Zelensky in their bilateral meeting.
He further said that India was ready to play an active role in the path towards peace and progress.
India and Ukraine also signed four agreements during Prime Minister Modi’s visit: the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Agriculture and Food Industry; the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Regulation of Medical Products; the Memorandum of Understanding on Humanitarian Assistance from India for the Implementation of High-Impact Community Development Projects; and the Cultural Cooperation Programme for 2024-2028.
