Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from professional cricket. The out-of-favour India batsman took to X to announce his retirement. Dhawan, who played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is, thanked the BCCI, DDCA and his fans in his retirement post. The 38-year-old had been out of Team India Since 2022 and with the emergence of youngsters, they have not managed to recover.
“As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I take with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind!” said Dhawan. “It is important to move on in order to move forward in life and that is why I am announcing my retirement from domestic and international cricket. I leave with peace in my heart for having played for India for so long.”
After years of hard work in domestic cricket, Dhawan finally made his India debut in an ODI against Australia in 2010, but went out for a duck. He made a comeback to white-ball cricket in 2011, but it was short-lived.
Dhawan’s red-ball offence earned him a call-up for the home Test series against Australia in 2013. He made a memorable debut in the third game and scored 187 off just 174 balls.
He made another comeback in the ODI squad for the 2013 Champions Trophy and has not looked back. He amassed 363 runs in just five matches in India’s successful campaign.
In the 2015 World Cup, Dhawan was again the leading run-scorer for India, scoring 412 runs in 8 matches. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Dhawan was again the leading run-scorer of the tournament, amassing 338 runs. He was followed by Rohit Sharma (304). Dhawan made a huge impact in the ICC 50-overs tournaments.
In 2018, he was named in the leadership group for the first time and assisted Rohit in the Asia Cup, which India won. Dhawan made his debut as captain in ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2021. Surprisingly, he was dropped from the T20I squad for the T20 World Cup that followed.
After a memorable debut in Tests, Dhawan failed to maintain his form in the longer format. He often struggled outside the Asian conditions and also sat on the bench. His last stint with the Test team was in 2017/18. After a comeback win against Sri Lanka, Dhawan retained his spot for a year. He was given a long rope on the 2018 tour of England and was dropped after a series of low scores.
Dhawan ends his Test career with 2315 runs. He scored 6793 runs in ODIs and 1759 runs in T20Is. He and Rohit formed a solid opening pair in ODIs.
Dhawan played for Delhi in domestic cricket and represented his state for a long time before his debut in India. He was part of the Delhi team that won the Ranji Trophy in the 2007/08 season. He remained unbeaten on 54 in the chase of the target of 230.
Dhawan also had a long career in the IPL and played every season from 2008 to 2024. He started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils (now known as Capitals of Delhi). He also played for Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrises in Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings. Dhawan won the IPL once with SRH.
