KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya faced massive backlash after appearing on Karan Johar’s talk show Koffee With Karan. KL Rahul said the interview “changed” him.

“The interview was a different world”

The cricketer, who is married to the actor Athiya ShettyHe said: “The interview was a different world. It changed me. It changed me completely. I was a very shy, soft-spoken kid growing up. Then I played for India and I became very confident, I had no problem being in a huge group of people. People will know that I’ve been in a room of 100 people because I spoke to everyone.”

He added: “I’m not doing it now because that (KWK) interview left a huge mark on me. Getting suspended from the team. I’ve never been suspended in school, I’ve never been punished in school. Matlab woh hua hi nahi hai mere saath (All this never happened to me). I don’t know how to handle it. I’ve done bad things in schools like chota mota (small things), but nothing that got me expelled from school or my parents having to come. That (KWK interview and the subsequent reaction) was my first (fall), and then you realise how bad it is.”

The KWK controversy

After his Episode of Koffee With Karan During the sixth season of the Karan Johar-hosted show in 2019, some of the comments made by cricketers were deemed “sexist”.

Despite apologies to fans and their own teammates, they were suspended by the BCCI and ruled out of a three-match ODI series against Australia. The duo were later fined. 20 lakh each by the BCCI. Karan at that time had also said who felt “very responsible” for the repercussions that cricketers had to face.
