Every year, thousands of artists, creators and community organizers gather at the Nevada Desert build a temporary city that disappears almost as suddenly as it comes to life. This metropolis, called Black Rock City, is the site of the Burning Man Festivalan annual collaborative event where thousands of people descend into the desert to spend nine days away from society. This year, the Burning Man The festival will be held from August 25 to September 2, 2024.
History of the Festival
The first Burning Man event took place in 1986, when Larry Harvey and Jerry James built a human effigy and burned it on a beach in San Francisco, drawing a crowd of about 30 people. Since then, thousands have gathered at Black Rock City to celebrate art, self-expression and life in general.
Burning Man’s mission is to foster a community where people can express their creativity and contribute to the collective. Ten guiding principles, including participation, self-reliance, and community effort, shape the culture of this community. The annual theme, “Burning Man 2024: Curiouser & Curiouser,” reflects this focus on exploration and self-discovery.
About the Festival
The festival does not include any entertainment, but instead encourages participants to come and perform for the community. The idea is to celebrate life by enjoying music, art, dance and drinks. Activities such as zip-lines, massages and tattoos are also offered in different corners of the festival, and are also free of charge. Any commercial activity is prohibited in the region, except for the sale of ice; only gifts and bartering are allowed at the festival.
The event has gained a lot of popularity over the years, becoming one of the most popular festivals in the world. VIP guests also attend the festival and live in luxury campsites. To cater to the needs of these VIP guests, luxury neighborhoods have been created that are dedicated exclusively to wealthy campers.
Another key aspect is that the event ends with people leaving the desert exactly as they found it: without trash.
No money needed!
The use of money is strictly prohibited at the festival. People must provide their own food, water and electricity. Only bartering and gift giving are permitted. Participants are also given a manual containing the principles to follow in order to maintain proper decorum.
