Menstrual Leave Policy: Chhattisgarh-based Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) has taken a major step and implemented a menstrual leave policy for female students. A spokesperson for the college said that the university has implemented its menstrual leave policy which came into effect from July 1 this year. A press release issued by the university on Tuesday said that this leave policy is a part of the ‘Health Shield’ initiative (HNLU).

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor VC Vivekanandan, thanked the Academic Council for supporting this initiative. He said, “The implementation of the menstrual leave policy is an important step keeping in mind the special needs of young female students. We are grateful to the Academic Council for supporting the said policy.”

Students will be able to enjoy 6 days of leave per semester

A university spokesperson said, “Female students are allowed to take 1-day leave per calendar month during the academic day. Currently, this benefit is given to female students during the regular teaching day. In the future, consideration is being given to granting leave to female students due to special needs, including during exam days. The spokesperson also clarified that female students suffering from disorders such as irregular menstrual syndrome or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) will be allowed 6 days leave in a semester. This initiative has been taken to provide additional support and relief to female students suffering from these disorders.

Periodic leave at these universities

Earlier in January 2023, Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala had launched the country’s first menstrual leave policy. Following this, Punjab University in Chandigarh, Guwahati University in Assam, NALSAR Law University in Hyderabad and Tezpur University in Assam have also announced such holidays. This university offers leave to female students during menstruation.
