On Saturday, normal movements prevailed in the state after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) called off the ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ following the Bombay High Court’s restraining order on political parties from coming out on roads. The High Court restrained political parties or individuals from proceeding with a rally in Maharashtra over the sexual assault incident, on August 24 or any future date, saying such a protest would paralyse normal life. A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said that if political parties and individuals were not restrained from proceeding with the rally call on Saturday, it would result in huge losses, not only in terms of economy and business but also essential services and basic amenities, including healthcare, which must be prevented.

However, leaders like Sharad Pawar and workers of opposition parties staged demonstrations against the Mahayuti government with black bands tied around their mouths across the state.

The MVA alliance formed by Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar had called for a statewide shutdown on August 24 to protest against the alleged sexual assault of two kindergarten girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district.

Uddhav Thackeray demanded that charges be dropped against those who protested in Badlapur over the alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls, warning that the opposition would have to take to the streets if they did not do so. Addressing a press conference, Thackeray said the ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ on August 24 called by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) bloc is not political but against “perversion” and urged people of all castes and religions to participate in it. He asserted that the bandh would be held in the name of the people of the state.
