KEY POINTS
- An employee close to retirement used Microsoft Outlook’s delayed email feature to make his boss’s life miserable.
- They identified her sleeping pattern and deliberately sent emails at odd hours as revenge for being disturbed all day.
- The tactic is supposed to have worked and the boss got a taste of his own medicine.
“She’s one of those super aggressive people who wants to be CEO before she’s 45, so she’s doing it at the expense of the entire team. I’m close to retirement. I couldn’t care less. Her MO is to send emails all day asking questions and expecting an immediate response. She sometimes sends emails until midnight and always starts again after 7am, so I assumed she’s a person who sleeps from midnight to 7am,” they explained.
“I had a boss who loved cliffhangers. ‘I need that by 5pm, get it to me by 3:45pm, no later than the end of the day. ’ No matter how big or small the task was, it always came with a due date and time. And I would use deferred sending to send the cliffhanger email at 4:59, 3:44, 11:59. We didn’t get along before, and delaying the email didn’t help. But like most bosses, he left before he could do anything to stop me.”
Another commented: “It’s a good lesson to learn early: work “Work isn’t everything and life has many other purposes, some of which you are clearly missing out on if your kids aren’t getting your attention after work and your husband is sleeping in the guest room… It would be a good time to turn your life around.”
