Joe RootEngland’s fifty points were brought home in the dying moments of the fourth day of the opening Test. The hosts needed 205 to win the Manchester Test and although they were tested a bit, they met the challenge in emphatic fashion. England have taken a big step up the WTC points table after this victory.

The English team has moved up three places to fourth in the rankings. They now have a points percentage of 41.07 from their 14 matches. England have 7 wins, 6 losses and one draw in the current WTC cycle. Due to the 19-point deduction, their PCT has been affected.

England are, however, in the top five and still have hopes of reaching the WTC final. The Three Lions still have eight matches left in the current cycle, including the two against Sri Lanka in the ongoing series.

Before this match, England were in seventh place with 36.54 PCT to their name.

“It was the kind of pitch that suited the new ball. Once we got past 15 or 20 overs, we knew we could take advantage. Credit to our bowlers. [Root?] He’s a greedy Yorkshireman, isn’t he? There was a sense of calm as he sprang into action. [Smith] There are always nerves at the start of a test race, but he has the calm and game to face the step forward. I couldn’t be happier for him. I’m sure it will be the first of many. [Captaincy] “It was good, I enjoyed it… I enjoyed reading the game and finding different ways to get 20 wickets. The first day was a bit more challenging than I expected but that will always be the case,” England captain Ollie Pope said after the win.
