As White House chief medical adviser, Fauci, 83, became the face of the U.S. government’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Fauci said he expects to make a full recovery, although it could take several weeks to get back to normal, Stat reported.
The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Last year, there were about 2,500 cases in the United States and 182 deaths from the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of August 20 of this year, the CDC had recorded 216 cases in 33 states. The best way to prevent it is to avoid mosquito bites.
West Nile virus is commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people do not experience symptoms, about 1 in 5 may develop fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 1 in 150 infected people develop severe, sometimes fatal, illness. There are no vaccines to prevent West Nile virus and no medications to treat it.
