Jerusalem: Israel carried out air strikes in Lebanon Early on Sunday, they attacked positions linked to the Shiite militia. HezbollahAccording to the Israeli military, Hezbollah was “preparing to launch missiles and rockets towards Israeli territory.”

“In an act of self-defense to eliminate these threats, (the Israeli military) is attacking terrorist targets in Lebanon, from which Hezbollah planned to launch its attacks against Israeli civilians,” said Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

Iran-backed Hezbollah also announced Sunday that it had launched an attack on Israel using a large number of drones and rockets in retaliation for the killing of its top commander in a Beirut suburb last month, it said in a statement.

The Lebanon-based group said it was targeting a “special military objective” as well as the Iron Dome systems and other Israeli sites, but indicated the full scope of its response would take “some time.”

From Israel Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel-Aviv On Sunday, the airline began diverting incoming flights and delaying departures. According to Israeli media, the Israel Airports Authority confirmed these changes and flight tracking data shows that at least two El Al flights were significantly diverted southward following the announcement.

Hagari warned that Hezbollah was likely to “soon fire rockets, and possibly missiles and drones at Israel.” Shortly after the warning, sirens sounded in northern Israel. Lebanese media reported airstrikes in the southern part of the country, though details were initially scant. Images circulating on social media showed the attacks in southern Lebanon.

In his statement, Hagari said: “We can see that Hezbollah is preparing to launch a comprehensive attack on Israel, putting Lebanese civilians at risk.”

Hagari did not provide further details on the information he referred to.

The attacks came amid rising tensions and expectations of an escalation in the regional conflict. This comes after an Israeli strike killed a senior Hezbollah commander and an alleged Israeli assassination operation in Iran targeting Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
