Three educational institutions in West Bengal have been served a show-cause notice by the school education department for forcing students to participate in a demonstration during school hours against the murder and rape of a woman doctor at a Kolkata hospital, an official said.

The three state-aided schools — Baluhati High School, Baluhati Girls’ High School and Bantra Rajlakshmi Girls School — all in Howrah district, were served with the show-cause notice on Friday and asked to give an explanation within 24 hours. The school education department official said that along with students, several teachers and non-teaching staff had participated in a joint demonstration organised by the schools on Thursday in “violation of all rules and regulations”. Strict action will be taken against the school authorities if their responses are not satisfactory.

“Students are not allowed to participate in such a demonstration, especially during classes on weekdays. We came to know that some teachers and other staff members of schools took students to the demonstration,” he said. The show-cause notice is preceded by a directive issued by the school education department of Paschim Medinipur district prohibiting students from participating in any activity that is not related to the school or the department.

“School students are not allowed to participate in any political activity,” said the notice issued by district inspector of schools Paschim Medinipur. The official said the measures were necessary in the wake of reports that students from higher classes were being recruited for political rallies and blockades across the state to demand justice for the doctor. However, the notices did not mention the incident directly.

Since the rape and murder of the doctor about two weeks ago, several parts of the state have been shaken by protest demonstrations called by citizens, civil society organizations, youth, student and women’s organizations and political parties demanding the arrest of all perpetrators of the crime.
