Situated on the banks of the Gomti River, Shahi Qila in Jaunpur was built by Firoz Shah in 1362. The inner gate of this fort is 26.5 feet high and 16 feet wide. The fort is located on an elevated ground on the northern bank of the Gomti River. Not many know about it, but this elevation held strategic importance as it provides a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area. After being built by Firoz Shah, it was captured by the Sharqi dynasty, who carried out several extensions and modifications and in the process added more grandeur to the citadel.
Architectural structure of the Fort
The defensive mechanism consisted of ramparts and ditches. The double-layered wall was topped with bastions and battlements. The ditches have long since dried up, but the imposing ramparts and bastions still dominate the skyline of Jaunpur.
The central gate is 36 feet high and a huge dome was built over it. Today, only the eastern gate and the arches are still standing, telling the story of its greatness. The magnificent gate in front of it was built by Munim Khan for security purposes and was decorated with blue and yellow stones.
The historic site also houses a Turkish bath and a mosque. A beautiful view of the Gomti River and the city can be seen from this fort. Today, Jaunpur Fort is a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Shahi Qila Turkish Bath
This mosque dates back to 1376 and was built by Feroz Shah’s brother. It has a total of three domes and a triple-arched entrance on the east side. Unlike the mosque, the interiors of the hammam are accessible and consist of several rooms connected by a labyrinth of passages.
More about the Shahi Qila
The Shahi Qila complex at Jaunpur also houses a dargah, which contains the mortal remains of an unknown Sufi saint. There are also a few dry wells. The entire area is well maintained, with manicured lawns and flower beds, which lie in the shadow of the imposing fort wall.
