India’s Tanvi Patri claimed the U-15 girls’ singles title at the Badminton Asia U-17 and U-15 Junior Championships after defeating Vietnam’s Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen in straight games in the final in Chengdu, China on Sunday.

Patri, 13, the No. 1 seed, closed out the match in just 34 minutes by claiming a 22-20, 21-11 victory over her second-seeded opponent in the summit clash.

With this feat, Parti joins the likes of Samiya Imad Farooqui and Tasnim Mir, who won the U-15 girls’ singles crown in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Such was Patri’s dominance throughout the tournament that she did not lose a single game in the five matches she played.

In the final, Patri was down 11-17, but kept her cool as Nguyen made a series of unforced errors. The Indian seized the opportunity with both hands to take the first game.

Patri continued her winning streak, dominating the second game from the start to eventually seal the match and claim the gold medal.

India thus returns with a haul of two medals, including a gold and a bronze.

Gnana Dattu TT won the bronze medal in the men’s under-17 singles event on Saturday.
