Janmashtami 2024: Sweet treats to honour the birth of Lord Krishna

This year, the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth falls on August 26. Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival that honors the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. On this day, devotees fast, chant, and prepare traditional and meaningful dishes to enjoy and share with their families.

To add a touch of culinary delight to your celebrations, we have curated a traditional Janmashtami recipe for you to prepare with your loved ones.

Makhana Kheer

Ingredients

  • 6 cups of milk
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 3 cups (30 g) fox nuts
  • 210 g of condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup (30 g) shredded coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 5 chopped almonds
  • 8-10 raisins

Method

  • Step 1: Fry the makhana in ghee and grind it.
  • Step 2: Mix the crushed makhana and milk in a saucepan and keep the flame below the boiling point while gently bubbling for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Step 3: Add the shredded coconut and continue cooking and stirring until creamy.
  • Step 4: Add the condensed milk and cook until desired consistency is reached.
  • Step 5: Sprinkle a pinch of cardamom powder.
  • Step 6: Serve with chopped almonds and raisins.

 

Malai Peda

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (75 ml) milk
  • 3 tablespoons
  • 1 teaspoon corn flour
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 380 g of condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon (optional) elaichi powder

Method

  • Step 1: Place the milk, corn flour, lemon juice and ghee in a bowl and mix well.
  • Step 2: In a thick kadai, heat the mixture stirring constantly until it thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the kadai.
  • Step 3: Once the texture of the Peda is shaped properly, let it cool.
  • Step 4: Shape it into pieces
  • Step 5: Sprinkle the elaichi powder.

 

Thandai Kalakand

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of powdered milk
  • 3 peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 5 almonds
  • 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A few strands of saffron
  • 500 g of paneer
  • 10-15 rose petals

Method

  • Step 1: Coarsely grind the peppercorns, fennel seeds, almonds, poppy seeds, cardamom powder and saffron.
  • Step 2: Chop the paneer and mix it with condensed milk, milk powder, Thandai powder and rose petals.
  • Step 3: Until the mixture thickens, cook the mixture over medium heat.
  • Step 4: Pour the mixture into a greased dish to let it cool.
  • Step 5: Cut into squares and serve.
