The BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC) met today (August 25) in the national capital to finalise the party’s candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda were accompanied by other CEC members, including Home Minister Amit Shah, as they held discussions with party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir.
PM Modi left the party headquarters after attending the BJP Central Election Committee meeting held ahead of the J&K assembly elections.
Last week, Jammu and Kashmir leaders held a lengthy meeting with Nadda and Shah, among others, to narrow down the list of possible candidates and work out strategies for the elections. The CEC will later meet Haryana leaders to finalise the party’s candidates for the assembly elections.
Jammu and Kashmir Election Schedule
The 90-member assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls in three phases on September 18, 25 and October 1. The 90-member assembly of Haryana will go to polls on October 1.
The counting of votes is scheduled for October 4. In the last Assembly elections held in 2014, when Jammu and Kashmir was a full-fledged state, the BJP had bagged 25 seats. The party is trying its best to fend off the challenge from a resurgent Congress, which has partnered with the National Conference, especially in the Jammu region, a BJP stronghold since 2014.
The BJP also faces a strong challenge from the Congress in Haryana, where it has been in power since 2014.
