Located about 40 km from Peren, in Nagaland, the Ntangki National Park It covers a distance of over 200 square kilometres stretching across various rainforests, mountains and cliffs. Founded by the British in 1923, these include some of the rarest primate species in eastern India such as the hoolock gibbon or the golden langur. However, more recently, you may be able to spot Asian forest tortoises which were reintroduced to the park last year.
Best time to visit Ntangki National park
Wildlife experts and passionate travelers suggest that visitors visit Ntangki National Park in the months of November to January as winter brings with it the ideal weather and time to see a variety of different wildlife species.
The other best time would be during the summer season i.e. April or May as the summers in Ntangki are milder and many of the animals are too shy to come out during the swampy monsoon season.
Areas to visit in Ntangki National Park
The park, which covers a total area of 200 square kilometres, was named Ntangki Forest Reserve with a total area of 181 square kilometres. Four years later it was expanded by 20 square kilometres and then turned into a wildlife sanctuary, which later became Ntangki National Park.
It is divided into three main zones: the core zone (55 km2), the tourist zone (30 km2) and the buffer zone (117 km2). The tourist zone extends up to the Ntangki River and is surrounded by rivers on all sides. All tourism and wildlife awareness activities are carried out in this region.
The core zone is a protected area that must remain intact from any human interference. The main idea is to allow the ecosystem to thrive and grow on its own. Finally, the buffer zone is the area that occupies the majority of the land and is a transition zone, from which parts are added to the other zones when the need arises.
Permits required to explore Ntangki National Park
It is recommended to obtain permission from the Chief Wildlife Ranger of the local forest department before visiting the park as it is not normally open to the public.

The nearest town to this national park is Dimapur, which is a 3-hour drive away. If you are looking for comfortable living, this may be your best bet as there are several 5-star hotels like Zone Niathu Dimapur, right next to Dimapur Airport, which offers several facilities like swimming pools, private parking, and an indoor tennis court to make your trip to the fullest.
