Maharashtra: Congress MP Vasant Chavan dies after prolonged illness

Congress MP Vasant Chavan died on Monday at a private hospital in Hyderabad after a prolonged illness, party sources said.

Chavan (69) passed away in hospital around 4am, according to sources. He was receiving treatment for kidney problems since last week.

The Congress veteran had won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat this year despite his health problems and large defections, including that of former chief minister Ashok Chavan, who joined the BJP ahead of the polls.

Soon after the results of the Lok Sabha elections were declared, Vasant Chavan thanked Ashok Chavan for joining the BJP.

In the Lok Sabha elections, Vasant Chavan defeated incumbent BJP MP Pratap Patil Chikhalikar by 59,442 votes, overcoming problems such as a weakened party after Ashok Chavan defected to the BJP just before the election and his own personal health problems.

Born in Naigaon in Nanded district, Vasant Chavan was a member of the gram panchayat for a long time and later became a member of the zilla parishad in 1990 and 2002.

He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2002 and became a Member of the State Legislative Assembly from the Naigaon Assembly seat. He served as an MP from 2009 to 2014.

He was also the Chairman of Nanded District Central Cooperative Bank from 2021 to 2023.

His last rites will be performed at Naigaon at 11 am, sources said.
