Hema Commission report: Minu Muneer names 4 people for misconduct

A week after the explosive Hema Committee report on women’s working conditions in the Kerala film industry came to light, two film personalities have resigned from their positions in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) and fresh allegations involving two-time CPI(M) legislator Mukesh emerged on Monday.

On Sunday, AMMA general secretary Siddique and Kerala State Chalachitra Academy president and film icon Ranjith resigned from their posts.

Actress Minu Muneer on Monday said that she had bad experiences with Mukesh, popular actors Manian Pillai Raju, jayasurya and former general secretary of AMMA-Edavela Babu between 2008 and 2013, after which she left the film industry.

Muneer said that in 2008, Jayasurya hugged her while she was coming out of the bathroom.

“This left me stunned and Mukesh also misbehaved with me by barging into my room. Raju and Babu spoke to me in words that had sexual connotations,” Muneer said.

She said that these four actors played their roles after she applied for membership in AMMA and her application was rejected.

“After such bad experiences, I left the industry and now that the Hema Committee report has been published and a special police team has been formed to investigate the allegations, I will definitely register my complaint,” Muneer said.

Meanwhile, Raju said he was convalescing after surgery and was unable to react earlier.

“It is natural that more and more allegations are coming out against those who did not make it in the industry. My view is that an inquiry should be conducted. We all saw how the very popular former chief minister Oommen Chandy had to face similar allegations,” Raju said.

Incidentally, soon after the resignations of Siddique and Ranjith, the Pinarayi Vijayan government decided to form a high-level police team that includes four women IPS officers.

The team will have its first meeting on Tuesday to decide its way forward.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Culture and Cinema Saji Cherian told the media on Monday that he has nothing more to add as CM Vijayan has already informed the people about what the government is doing.

“The Minister of Justice has also spoken about what is going to happen and so I have nothing more to add,” Cherian said.

State Minister for Local Self-Government MB Rajesh said the law would take its course and the state government would play its role.

All eyes are now on the upcoming special executive meeting of AMMA, which was scheduled for Tuesday but had to be postponed.

AMMA president, superstar Mohanlal, whose wife is hospitalised in Chennai, has expressed his inability to be present in Kochi to participate in the meeting and hence it has been postponed.

The meeting must be attended by the secretary and the president, but with the resignation of Siddique and Mohanlal Looking for a few more days, the AMMA meeting will have to be held at another time.
