Attention GST taxpayers: Taxpayers without a valid bank account will not be able to file GSTR-1 return from September 1

GST taxpayers who do not provide bank account details to the GST authorities will not be able to file the external supply return GSTR-1 from September 1, GST Network (GSTN) said in a notice.

Under Rule 10A of GST, a taxpayer must provide details of a valid bank account within a period of 30 days from the date of grant of registration, or before furnishing details of outward supplies of goods or services or both in Form GSTR-1 or using Invoice Supply Facility (IFF), whichever is earlier.

“From September 1, 2024, this rule will come into effect. Therefore, from the tax period of August 2024, the taxpayer will not be able to file Form GSTR-01/IFF, as applicable, without providing the details of a valid bank account in his/her registration details on the GST portal,” the GSTN said in a notice dated August 23.

The GST Council, at its meeting in July last year, approved an amendment to Rule 10A to strengthen the registration process and effectively address the menace of false and fraudulent registrations in the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

As per the amendment, a registered taxpayer was required to provide bank account details with his name and PAN within 30 days of grant of registration or before filing of external supply return in Form GSTR-1/IFF (invoice supply facility), whichever is earlier.

In the notice, the GSTN has requested all taxpayers who have not yet provided valid bank account details to add their bank account information in their registration details by visiting the GST portal.

“…In the absence of valid bank account details on file for GST, you will not be able to file GSTR-1 or IFF, as the case may be, with effect from the filing period of August 2024,” the GSTN notice added.
