West Bengal child rights body asks police to take action after rape threat to TMC leader’s daughter

The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has taken suo motu cognizance of a viral video on social media in which a man was seen allegedly advertising a reward of ₹10 crore for “raping” the minor daughter of a senior TMC leader, and urged the police to take immediate action.

WBCPCR claimed that the man seen in the video, which could not be independently verified by PTI, was a resident of Malancha in Minakhan block of North 24 Parganas district.

“As the entire state mourns the sad demise of the RG Kar Hospital doctor, asking for another rape to settle the score is clearly a violation of the law and could send a dangerous message to the society if punitive action is not taken. This may put not only the minor in question but all minors at risk,” she said.

“The commission calls on the police to arrest the perpetrators and provide adequate protection to the minor in question,” it added.

WBCPCR president Tulika Das also wrote to the SP of Basirhat police district, requesting immediate intervention.

“You are requested to submit a report of the action taken in this case along with copies of the FIR and other relevant documents to the Commission within 2 days of receipt of this letter, so as to enable the Commission to take further action in the instant case,” it said.

Das also asked the police to review and revise safeguards for the protection of child rights, besides investigating violations of child rights and recommend initiation of proceedings.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien criticised the video, posting on X: “Drag us into political fray with your dirty tricks. You’ve done it before but today you’ve crossed the line. Stop threatening children. There are not enough words to condemn the blatant threats against our National General Secretary’s daughter. STOP THIS NOW!”
