New Zealand Immigration introduces temporary visa for migrant workers, here’s everything you need to know

In a measure intended to provide temporary relief to specific industries to address labor shortages., The New Zealand Government has introduced a new Specific Purpose Work Visa subcategory for industries that experience seasonal peaks.

According to New Zealand’s official Immigration website, the new visa subcategory “is a provisional, time-limited, streamlined pathway more closely aligned with the duration of seasonal work.”

To be eligible, New Zealand Immigration states that the seasonal work must be directly affected by changes in weather, such as harvesting, ski instruction or tree planting.

Furthermore, the works must begin no later than 31 May 2025 and their duration will not exceed 9 months.

In particular, horticulture, viticulture and fishing crew work covered by other visas are excluded.

If interested in applying, migrant workers must submit their applications no later than March 31, 2025.

On the other hand, employers must have an employer accreditation and pay at least NZD$29.66 per hour for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

In addition, employers must advertise the position in advance and provide evidence of this to the migrant to include in their application.

Meanwhile, Immigration New Zealand said it is also considering the need for a longer-term visa option for seasonal workers as part of the ongoing review of the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
