A video showing a long queue stretching over a kilometre at an Indian visa centre in Bangladesh has gone viral on social media and has garnered widespread attention. The footage, shared by a social media user, shows the seemingly endless queue outside Asia’s largest mall, Jamuna Future Park, where one of the few remaining Indian visa centres is located.
The user captioned the video: “A kilometer-long queue outside the Indian visa centre at Asia’s largest mall, Jamuna. The queue started inside, involved many aisles, then went outside and reached the main road. It went on and on and on. Who will process your visa bro? Most of the staff are back in India and the embassy is running at limited capacity. They don’t have the required staff. And all the blame lies with you.”

This situation arose after India closed most of its visa centres in Bangladesh following a wave of violent protests that culminated in the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The protests, initially sparked by political and economic discontent, escalated into widespread unrest that led to the overthrow of Hasina’s government.
In the wake of the unrest, Bangladesh has been the scene of ongoing incidents of violence, including targeted attacks on the minority Hindu community. The closure of Indian visa centres has contributed to the chaos, leaving thousands of Bangladeshi citizens struggling to secure travel permits. The Indian Visa Centre was closed on 5 August, so many passports were already in process. Today, the High Commission announced that passports currently at the visa centre will be delivered soon, while new applications will not be accepted.
Following the violence, many Bangladeshis have been waiting at the Indian border or trying to sneak into Indian territory. India has deployed a strong patrol line of the Border Security Force to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants.
