Manipur Chief Minister L. Susindro said police would be deployed at petrol stations across the state.

At a press conference, he warned fuel retailers that they would face legal action if they refused to sell fuel despite having stocks.

Susindro, the state’s minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, said there have been several cases where people have left petrol stations without paying after refuelling.

“These incidents have caused many petrol stations to close their doors due to financial losses,” he said.

“We will deploy police and Food and Public Distribution Department personnel at petrol pumps,” he said, appealing to the population not to fall prey to extortion.

With several petrol stations closing down in the Imphal Valley, a severe fuel crisis has hit the region.

“Legal action will be taken against those service station operators who refuse to sell fuel despite having it in stock. There is sufficient fuel in the state,” Susindro said.

He also said that frequent landslides along national highways have disrupted transportation of LPG cylinders to the state, leading to shortages.
