As the second half of ‘Outlander’ season seven prepares to premiere on Starz in a couple of months, it’s clear that the series is nearing its conclusion. The series has already been renewed for an eighth season, which will also be its last.

However, fans of Diana Gabaldon’s books know that nine novels have already been published and that a tenth is in the works. On her Facebook page, in the comments section of a post that includes an excerpt from the tenth book (via ‘RadioTimes’), Gabaldon revealed that season seven will roughly cover the events of her seventh book, ‘An Echo in the Bone.’

This leaves three books still to be adapted: ‘Written in My Own Heart’s Blood’, ‘Go Tell the Bees I’m Gone’ and the upcoming Book Ten, while only ten episodes remain to close the story.

“It won’t really resemble the end of the book series,” Gabaldon explained, adding that “under normal circumstances (one book per season) they can fit about 10% of the book’s content into the series. How much of the (roughly speaking) 1.2 million words from those three books do you think they can fit into ten hours of television? Obviously, they’ll have to pick out some major scenes/threads to film and try to fit them into a framework that makes sense for a season and that they can lead to a reasonably satisfying conclusion.”

In response to another comment, Gabaldon also mentioned that “there won’t be much from Book Ten in the series finale,” which isn’t surprising given that she’s still in the process of writing it. She did, however, provide the showrunners with a synopsis and some snippets of dialogue.

We’ll see how the showrunners handle Gabaldon’s source material over time. The remainder of season seven is set to premiere on Starz on November 22, 2024, though an air date for season eight has yet to be announced.
