Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, August 27, that he will continue to take a stand and will not allow “Miya” Muslims to take control of the state. The term “Miya” refers to Muslims of Bengali origin, who are often accused of being “illegal immigrants.”
He Bharatiya Janata Party The BJP leader was addressing the assembly on the adjournment motions moved by the opposition parties to discuss the law and order situation in the state in the context of the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
Sarma said the crime rate in Assam has not increased considering the population growth.
The Opposition in the House accused him of taking sides, to which he responded by saying, “I will take sides. What can you do about it? Why are people from Lower Assam going to Upper Assam? So that Miya Muslims can take control of Assam? We will not allow that to happen,” Sarma said, according to a PTI report.
Sarma’s comments come two days after opposition MP Akhil Gogoi claimed that Indian People’s Party (BJP) is trying to recreate the 2002 Gujarat Episodes in Assam. Gogoi said on Sunday amid reports that some organisations have allegedly been threatening the Miya Muslims of Upper Assam to leave the administrative division.

A section of the community was threatened following the alleged gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing area of Nagaon district of Assam on August 22. A 24-year-old youth, identified as Tafazul Islam, was among the three accused in the gang-rape case.
The opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also wrote to the Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya seeking action against unknown organisations and fundamentalist groups issuing threats against that section of the Muslim community, demanding that they leave Upper Assam.
It’s not the first time
Biswa has also issued statements against Miya Muslims before. Last year, she said that the BJP did not need the votes of Miya Muslims.Miya village of ‘char’ (river sandbanks) over the next 10 years.
“The BJP will take care of public welfare and support us, but there is no need for them to vote for us. There is nothing wrong in supporting us. Let them shout ‘zindabad’ for Himanta Biswa Sarma, Narendra Modi and BJP,” Sarma was quoted as saying by news agency PTI in October 2023.
