Upset stomach? Know the causes and treatments

Having an upset stomach can make you feel uncomfortable and affect those around you. Symptoms like bloating, nausea, or diarrhea can disrupt your daily life, preventing you from going to work or school, running errands, or even enjoying vacations.

Several factors can contribute to an upset stomach, including medications, foods and drinks, lifestyle habits, and stress.

To help you better understand and manage your discomfort, we’ve outlined some of the most common reasons behind an upset stomach.

Causes of upset stomach

Stress: Although stress is not as common a cause as food and drink, it can cause an upset stomach. For example, meeting a new person or your partner’s family can cause stress that constricts the blood vessels in your stomach, leading to discomfort.

Serious conditions: If you experience severe or constant stomach pain or abnormal pelvic pain, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a malignant tumor (cancer).

Processed foods: Frequent consumption of processed foods such as wheat, cakes, bread, pasta and other spicy and greasy foods can cause stomach upset. It is best to limit the consumption of these foods.

Lactose intolerance: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms can occur due to lactose intolerance, leading to digestion problems and stomach upset.

Ulcers: Persistent pain in the stomach could indicate the presence of an ulcer in the stomach lining.

Infections: Diarrhea caused by infections is common and usually resolves on its own, but it is important to be careful about what you eat and drink during this time.

Eat home-cooked meals: Prioritize home-cooked meals whenever possible.

Balanced diet: incorporate more fruits, vegetables and yogurt into your diet.

De-stress: Close your eyes and try to calm down by inhaling and exhaling for 10 seconds.

Tobacco and alcohol: Avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of unnecessary stomach ulcers.
